Music for focus

In Carnatic music, a strong foundation begins with understanding the basics of musical notes—swaras, the building blocks of melodies. Each swara carries a distinct pitch and emotional color, forming the framework for ragas. Early training focuses on mastering musical patterns across different ragams.

Once these patterns are internalized, rhythm (talam) is layered in through varied beat cycles, bringing structure and dynamism to the music. Mastery of melody and rhythm together engages and stimulates both the right and left hemispheres of the brain—sharpening focus, enhancing memory, and strengthening cognitive flexibility.

This curriculum will include mastery these musical patterns: Sarali, Jantai and Dhatu varasais and the rhythmic patterns or talams: Alankarams

It will also include 4-6 Nottuswarams. Nottuswarams are a unique set of simple, Western-influenced compositions in Carnatic music, created by Muthuswami Dikshitar. The melodies are inspired by European folk and military tunes, but with lyrics in Sanskrit.

Because nottuswarams use uncomplicated swaras and familiar rhythmic patterns, they are an accessible bridge between beginner exercises and more complex ragas. Their repetitive melodic structures help train auditory memory, pitch accuracy, and rhythmic consistency—making them an excellent tool for developing focus and confidence in early learners.

For students who have mastered the basics of swaras, talam, and simple patterns in the Music for Focus program, this stage introduces more structured compositions. Lessons cover:

  • Geetams – short, simple melodies that combine swaras and lyrics, helping students connect pitch, rhythm, and lyrics.

  • Nottuswarams – light, Western-inspired tunes set in simple ragas, ideal for building fluency and language skills (Sanskrit)

  • Varnams – longer, more complex pieces that sharpen vocal mastery of the raga through ghamakas and rhythmic fundamentals. They are used as foundational practice for advanced music.

  • Simple Kritis – msuical compositions in various ragas that blend melody, rhythm, and expression.
